Profile
Siba Sahabi (b. 1979) is a poetic designer. Through her work she shows how cultures can influence one another and how this exchange can lead to new expressions. Siba translates cultural heritage into contemporary design through an interpretation of both historical forms and concepts. She creates a wide range of centrepieces—from objects for the table such as vases and lamps to large-scale interior items such as room dividers.
Through experimental application of different materials, such as paper, felt and resin, Siba Sahabi plays with the perception of surfaces and structures. Next to limited edition, handmade items, she develops concepts and designs products for various labels such as Pols Potten and Rosenthal.
International and cross-disciplinary collaborations form an important source of inspiration. In recent years she has teamed up with choreographer Iván Pérez, graphic designer Thijs Verbeek, dancer Sara Toscano, film director Niels van den Top, photographer Arjan Benning and composer Rutger Zuydervelt/ Machinefabriek. Siba Sahabi works with media such as film and photography to illuminate the context of her designed objects and to visualize her research through narrative.
Her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries such as Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Spazio Rossana Orlandi in Milan and Saatchi Gallery in London.
