About this product

Architonic ID: 1002890

Year of Launch: 1945

pp66 was designed in 1945 and became the quintessential modern outcome of Wegner’s studies of traditional Chinese chairs from the Ming Dynasty.

The pp66 Chinese Chair became a cornerstone for Wegner, and the scarce, but still robust and functional geometry constituted the foundations for many later designs.

The Chinese Chair is one of Wegner’s earliest designs in production yet it is produced using the most modern bending technique.

Available in oak, ash and cherry.

Papercord seat.

Concept

At Kunsthåndværkets Spring Exhibition in 1943, Wegner presented his first version of a chair inspired by an old Chinese chair, which he had seen at the Danish Museum of Industrial Arts. Since then, more versions have appeared.

Originally, PP 66 was designed for Fritz Hansen where it was only in production for a few years. PP Møbler began producing PP 66 in 1976 where the basic element, a 2 meter steam-bent pole, was preserved. In 1991 the chair was made stronger by replacing the steam-bent pole with a pre-compressed one.

The prototype for PP 56 was developed in cooperation with PP Møbler, and went into production in 1989. PP 56 differs from its predecessor, PP 66, by having an attached seat and a different frame.
