The billiard game was born in France, where the first billiard table was built for King Louis XI in 1429. Popularity of the game increased rapidly and between 1550 and 1630 the first Billiard leagues were created. Kings and the great Royal ladies played the game with passion (in the 18th century women used to play billiard as much as men).
French Billiard or Carom, played with 3 balls appeared in 1850. Numerous competitions were organized and in 1873 the first championship was held.
Until the first half of 19th century, the game area of the table was made of oak. Wood was then replaced by stone or marble until 1900. Since then, slate has been the preferred material, and no other superior replacement material has yet been found.
