Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp is a multi-award-winning Australian architectural practice dedicated to design excellence and the enhancement of the public domain.
The multi-disciplinary fjmt design studio explores the evolution of architectural form by synthesising place and programme through an elaboration of the tectonic. fjmt’s work focuses on the spatial and organic interconnection of built form and site to embody shared values and aspirations.

fjmt have won numerous architectural and design awards including the World Architecture Festival World Building of the Year, the AIA Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Buildings and the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design, the NZIA Architecture Medal, and the RIBA International Award.

Through studios in Sydney and Melbourne, and project offices interstate and overseas, fjmt undertake public, institutional, commercial and residential commissions throughout Australasia and recently in Europe. These commissions are frequently the result of
international design competitions.

Studio
From studios in Sydney and Melbourne, together with specific project offices and collaborators, Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp undertake a range of projects in Australia, Europe, South-East Asia and New Zealand.

fjmt offers services in architecture, landscape architecture, master planning and interior design. With a staff of more than 75 personnel, the fjmt architectural team has a wealth of architectural and technical capability to assist them as required. This includes specialists in Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design, 3D Visualisation (all tertiary qualified) and a team of administration/non-architectural staff including a practice manager, graphic designers and IT support.

fjmt’s team of professionals are proficient in, and aided by, the latest visualisation, communication and documentation technology. The practice has placed much emphasis on technology (computer hardware and software) to facilitate the design process. Accordingly, fjmt has the latest in CAD capability; designing and documenting using a fully transitioned 3D methodology (ArchiCAD) and the most powerful computer workstations and have an array of high-speed and large format colour printers.

The dedication of key team members for the duration of a project is important in maintaining good person to person working relationships. This dedication of team members through every phase is demonstrated without exception in every fjmt project and is supported by client references.

Studio Culture
The process of making architecture is a weaving of overlaid networks of text, sketch, model (digital and physical), discussion, collaboration, experience and precedent. It is an evolution of concept that begins to find its own independent life and direction through testing, critique and prototype. It is also a collaborative search that holds back over-determinism and wilfulness, creating a space for the concept to develop its own life, often with surprising results. This process demands rigour, discipline, and the avoidance of peripheral distraction and the inessential.

Fundamental to the process of making architecture is the culture of excellence embodied within the studio. It is a collaborative and inclusive culture that extends not only to all the architects, landscape architects, interior designers, urban designers, technicians and graphic designers within the fjmt studio but also the full engineering consultant team, cost planners and most importantly the project client and stakeholders.
