Established in 1998 by Tim Jackson, Jon Clements and Graham Burrows, JCB is a design-led architectural practice of over 50 design professionals united by a shared commitment to the delivery of innovative design solutions. JCB’s practice experience covers a wide range of project types and scales and each project, large or small, is treated as a critical contributor to our collaborative studio environment. Their clients range from developers to dentists, and from state governments to young families, working across both public and private sector in Australia, Europe and Asia.
JCB recognises that in partnership with our clients they have a critical responsibility to the future of our communities and the environment through the built work that we leave behind. The practice actively encourages our clients to embrace this responsibility and the opportunities that it provides. JCB’s extensive portfolio of projects have been widely recognised through both architecture awards and critical review in Australia and around the world. The practice is driven by a number of core design principles that allow us to explore each new project afresh, offering a design approach that is site sensitive, engaged with local climatic conditions and adaptive to contextual opportunities.
Biography
Tim Jackson
Tim has 30 years’ experience in professional practice. As a Project Director at JCB, Tim’s role is focused on client liaison, conceptual design, research and briefing. He maintains a hands-on role in design across all projects in the JCB office. Working across numerous project types and scales, Tim has developed extensive knowledge and experience in relation to client, stakeholder and community consultation. He has been responsible for the delivery of a number of major residential, commercial, urban design and master planning projects. A particular focus of Tim’s research includes multi-residential and domestic scale housing and the social role and responsibility of architecture and urban design.
Tim sits on the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Awards Committee, and has a wealth of experience in assessing the merits of exemplar building design. He has also been a juror for the RAIA awards program on a number of occasions. Tim is an advocate for innovative design in the built environment, and participates in guest critiques at major tertiary institutions across Australia. He maintains an ongoing relationship with The University of Melbourne as a tutor and guest critic within The Melbourne School of Design.
Jon Clements
Jon has over 20 years’ experience in professional practice and is passionate about design and practice at all scales. As a Project Director at JCB, Jon’s role in the company is multi-disciplined and includes briefing, concept and sketch design, design development, contract documentation, contract administration, contract liaison, cost control, project management and office management.
As a natural extension of JCB’s commitment to promoting the public benefits of quality architecture Jon has held a number of advocacy roles in both the profession and education with a particular focus on supporting young and emerging architects. Jon was elected to the role of National President of the Australian Institute of Architects in 2015 after serving as the Victorian Chapter President from 2012 to 2014.
He was a member of the RAIA State Visiting panel for Course Accreditation in 2002 and 2003. In 2006, he was appointed as a member of the RAIA National Accreditation Panel for The University of Melbourne. Jon has been a member of various RAIA Awards Juries and has a wealth of experience in assessing the merits of exemplar building design. He was also a member of the Building Advisory Council of Victoria between 2011 and 2014. Since graduating from Deakin University he has maintained a close and active association with its School of Architecture, providing regular contributions to course content and guest lectures. He has also provided guest lectures and design tutorials at The University of Melbourne, Monash University and RMIT.
Graham Burrows
Graham has over 20 years’ experience in professional practice. Graham’s responsibilities at JCB run the full range of practice activities from briefing, concept and sketch design, design development through to contract documentation, administration, cost control, project management and office management. He has been instrumental in the delivery of many residential, multi-residential, institutional, urban design and master planning projects within the office. Graham has a particular interest in projects that engage the public realm and is skilled at stakeholder and community consultation.
Graham studied at the University of Melbourne where he was awarded the Edward & Penelope Bilson Scholarship for his Design Thesis. He was also the winner of the AIA Biennale National Student Design Competition in 1995. Graham has been a member of numerous award juries and has also been a guest lecturer at the University of Melbourne and Deakin University.
