SMA is an internationally-recognized, Mexico City-based architecture firm. It has been in the business for almost a century. It operates with 90-plus design experts dedicated to the development of architectural, urban planning, interior design and masterplanning projects. The studio is recognized for its profound commitment to excellence and strategic thinking, which results in fully-integrated architectural solutions that have contributed greatly to Mexico’s architectural fabric. The office carefully evaluates urban context, social impact and viability in order to attend to the potential features and requirements of each project. Part of our working process relies on continuous communication between all our team members with special emphasis on sharing individual artistic skills and critical thinking, in order for an overall design to reach its full potential.
Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos was founded in 1937 by the renowned Mexican architect Juan Sordo Madaleno (1916-1985), whose style spread and won recognition throughout the world as defining “Modern Mexican Architecture”. He worked with other well-known studios from the period, including Luis Barragán, José Villagrán García, Augusto H. Álvarez, Ricardo Legorreta, Francisco Serrano and José A. Wiechers. In 1982 Javier Sordo Madaleno Bringas (Mexico City, 1956) took over the firm set up by his father and instigated an exponential expansion in projects of all kinds, with a constant focus on improving urban conditions and benefiting the user. In Javier 2008 created Grupo Sordo Madaleno, and is currently President of the Board. Although Sordo Madaleno had been working in the real estate business for over 50 years, it was only with the creation of the Group that the Real Estate department became established as a separate entity. In 2010 Javier Sordo Madaleno de Haro took over the reins as head of architectural design at SMA, as the third generation of the family, and in 2010 José Juan Sordo Madaleno de Haro took over the direction of the Real Estate Development department, establishing a strong family team to oversee the transition. In 2011, Fernando Sordo Madaleno de Haro joined the Architecture team as Junior Architect.
Philosophy
From the outset, Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos was established on a solid foundation and according to a philosophy of everyday life that treats clients as guests, and employees as an irreplaceable part of the team.
The firm is defined by its constant reinvention, both in terms of architecture and design, and in its aspirations and search for new challenges. This perspective confirms and proves that each project is different, where the sole element that links all the projects is the passion for quality and excellence in architectural design. When a project is presented to the firm it is meticulously examined in order to enhance its social, ethical, design and programmatic value, expanding its potential beyond the initial set of requirements.
At SMA, we are aware there is no single formula for success or for design. Each project adapts to its own specific circumstances with regard to the client, context and budget.
SMA always ends up establishing a close relationship with its clients, since all projects begin as a conversation about ideas and dreams, which brings together both sides as they move towards the same goal.
The working team welcomes diversity as a way of thinking independently as part of a team, and fosters space for growth as well as individual creative expression.
A constant concern with creating a better city has led the firm to become involved with projects that have a significant social and urban impact, which have been shown to regenerate their surrounding area over time, adding value and creating new urban conditions. Extending this commitment to society and the environment, SMA has implemented international environmental certification for its projects, and has supported countless projects pro bono which have a positive impact on improving quality of life.
