Director biographies
Surface ID is an award-winning interior design company that has built a reputation for delivering individual, bespoke solutions that are tailored to their client’s specific requirements.
Based in the West End of Glasgow, Surface ID was established in April 21 by directors Claire Kinna and Iain McArthur after they left the restaurant and bar group Big Beat where they were in-house designers. They now have over 25 years combined design experience after working on a variety of successful projects around the world. Iain attended Strathclyde University to study Architecture while Claire attended Edinburgh Napier and studied Interior Design.
Leading a focused and talented team of designers and technicians, all with a comprehensive understanding of the functional and operational design issues in the Industry, their work is well known for being creative, commercially successful and forward thinking.
Working in all sectors of the built environment, the practice has developed particular expertise in commercial interiors for hotels, bars, clubs and restaurants.
The firm has recently won two awards at the International Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, in the ‘Pub’ and ‘Multiple Bar or Club’ categories and are working on UK-based and international projects.
Studio Profile
Surface ID works as a team of seven in Glasgow’s leafy west end, in a converted mill building. Coming up with unique and unusual spatial solutions in order to make the best of a building, our projects vary in style but are all approached in the same way and are imbued with a level of detail, style, craft and wit that is not found elsewhere.
At Surface, we pride ourselves on innovative design schemes and attention to detail. The variety of our work reflects the ongoing trends and needs of the industry and public alike. We work on all scales of project: from small, intimate bar restaurants for 50 covers, to some of the largest and most complex leisure projects in the world.
