The Projector is an independent art house cinema repurposed from an old movie theatre built in the 70s. We were tasked to reconceive the lobby space from a transitional space for patrons before heading into the theatres, into a stand-alone event and cafe space. Working off the existing space which had been mostly white washed, the strategy was to inject a jot of colours and patterns into the space while incorporating original elements that are still intact, to create a space that evokes the magic and excitement of the cinema going experience.
A tiled counter with a lit signboard forms the anchor element within the space, complemented with a range of dining and lounging furniture. Old cinema seats were also repurposed to be used as part of the lobby furniture. All new elements other than the counter are loose to allow for easy reconfiguration of the space to be used for different functions and events. The resulting space is at once, a leisurely pit-stop before a movie, an event space, a cafe, and a living room; a destination in itself.
