ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR THE TELEGRAPH OFFICE OF DIE ZEIT, VIENNA
THESE CANAPÉ AND THE MATCHING CHAIRS ARE FROM A DESIGN OF 1902. IN THAT YEAR WAGNER DESIGNED AND FURNISHED THE TELEGRAPH OFFICE OF THE NEWSPAPER DIE ZEIT. THIS COMMISSION WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT INSTANCES OF COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE LOCAL FURNITURE INDUSTRY AND AN ARCHITECT OF THE SECESSION. WAGNER'S DESIGNS, WITH THEIR DISTINCTIVE METAL TRIM AND THE SQUARE RATHER THAN CIRCULAR SECTION STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS, INTRODUCED A DRAMATIC NEW PHASE IN THE STORY OF AVANT-GARDE FURNITURE IN AUSTRIA. THE DESIGNS CONCEIVED FOR DIE ZEIT WERE PUT INTO LIMITED COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION BY J. & J. KOHN. THIS FIRM WAS THONET'S PRINCIPAL RIVAL. TWENTY YEARS LATER KOHN WAS TO AMALGAMATE WITH THONET AND CEASE TRADING UNDER ITS OWN NAME.
