catalogue essay:
French designer Maria Pergay’s industrial-chic aesthetic positions her as one of the most pioneering designers of the 1970s. Her minimal, sculptural work with stainless steel represented a new era in interior decoration. Her use of steel demonstrates the technical virtuosity with which her designs were executed due to the material’s implacable and unsympathetic nature. The ‘Ring’ chair exhibits both her technical skill as well as her interest in sculptural form. The chair's actual construction is well-disguised and effortless, suggesting the rings are bent from one piece of stainless steel, further articulating the sculptural/functional character of the chair.
