Product description

Pair of German side chairs from the Maharaja's Palace in Indore, 1930-1933 commissioned by Eckart Muthesius, chrome-plated tubular steel and vinyl (2)
393/8 in. (100 cm) high.

The attribution of these chairs to a specific designer has proved elusive. This is a model that would appear to be unrecorded beyond the context of the furnishings of Manik Bagh Palace, and, regrettably, published documents on the palace do not reveal the authorship of these sleek-silhouetted Modernist creations. It is tempting to suggest that Muthesius may well have designed them, and he surely at least played a significant role in their design in his capacity as commissioning architect. For they call to mind certain other pieces conceived for the palace by Muthesius, notably, in their dramatic use of red covering against metal or black-stained wood, a pair of library chairs and a study suite.
