Product description

The early products manufactured by the Bauhaus metal workshops in Weimar under the direction of Johannas Itten were clearly influenced by his teachings. All household objects reflected his belief in handcrafted artistry and emphasized strict geometric and mathematical forms, such as the cube and the sphere. In the summer of 1923 under the new direction of Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, the style and philosophy of the department was dramatically changed by experiments with new industrial materials such as Perspex and molded glass. The aim was to produce prototypes of functional and attractive design for mass production. Fifty-nine products prefixed "MT" were conceived between 1922 and 1924 The metal workshop focused on lighting design, producing forty-three prototypes by mid-1924 The "Bauhaus Lamp" by Wagenfeld and Jucker was clearly the masterpiece of this period. It expresses its "industrial nature" with a visible electric cable inside the glass shaft and through the fluid yet streamlined form. Produced in various sizes dependant on model and year of production, this lamp is a milestone in modern lighting and industrial design.

Nickel-plated steel, brass, glass tube, glass, and opalescent glass stamped "UDUBA" and with TS monogram 14 in. (355 cm) high
