Jean Dunand had a close relationship with renowned Parisian milliner Madame Agnès. She encouraged him to enter the world of fashion after seeing the results of his experiments with lacquer and fabric, and he soon opened a studio dedicated to lacquering fabrics. He designed a variety of dresses and accessories, including pins, boxes, mirrors and decorations to be incorporated into Mme Agnès’s hats. In 1926, Dunand designed the office of her salon, featuring gold-lacquered paneled walls rubbed down to reveal the red base, upon which he hung one of his many eggshell and lacquer portraits of her. He also designed furniture for her private apartment.
