Mangiarotti was the visiting professor at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology from 1953 to 1954. While there he met Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and studied their works carefully. Mies van der Rohe's emphasis on structure as the basis of form is reflected in his work, as is his interest in traditional Japanese architecture. The importance that Mangiarotti placed on the structural joint as generator of form is evident in both his architectural and product design as illustrated in these silver vases. Both signed and numbered 60/300. Impressed signature, number and .925 silver mark.
