The kind of linguistic osmosis that occurs when a foreign word is adopted into a different language and remains there in its original form, helps enrich our understanding of each other and makes the world a smaller place. German has given us schnapps and schadenfreude; French, silhouette and soufflé; Japanese, sushi and sudoku. And a recent project by two Danish design greats could see another one join the list, in design circles, at least: Nawabari With a name derived from a Japanese word translated as 'stretching rope', Nawabari is a new seating collection by BoConcept and architecture office BIG that was conceived using ropes and sponge to explore and experiment with form. The result is a distinctive and playfully sculptural programme of pieces that, with BoConcept's global reach, might see it spread around the world like karaoke.
