Dietrich | Untertrifaller - Bregenz, Vienna, St Gallen, Paris, Munich
We are an internationally operating architectural practice with roots in Vorarlberg. We focus our architecture on the respectful use of resources, the development of socially balanced spaces and the appreciation of the cultural and architectural context. Since our founding, we have played a pioneering role in modern timber construction. Today, the office is managed by Dominik Philipp, Patrick Stremler and Much Untertrifaller and employs an international team of over 130 people at locations in Austria (Bregenz and Vienna), Switzerland (St. Gallen), France (Paris) and Germany (Munich).
The entire spectrum ranging from large-scale buildings and urban structures through alterations of existing buildings to single-family homes defies specialization, constantly challenges and inspires creativity and an inquiring mind. Our international projects we often realise together with local offices and regional partners.
A decisive factor in all our work is the resource-saving and appropriate use of materials, with a particular commitment to contemporary timber construction. We are well known for our expertise in design and construction and maintain this knowhow through relationships of dialogue and trust with clients, craftsmen and engineers. In course of lectures and in teaching we are glad to share our knowledge.
Our innovative and sustainable buildings received numerous awards, including the Hugo Häring Award (Kaltensteinhalle in Vaihingen), the AGPB Award and the Wood Design & Building Award (TUM School of Medicine and Health), the Design Educates Award (Public Library Dornbirn), the Hypo Bauherrenpreis (Public Library Dornbirn, Elementary School Unterdorf Höchst), the Wiener Wohnbaupreis / Vienna Housing Award (Residential complex In der Wiesen Süd, Vienna), the Prix National de la Construction Bois (Sports Center Alice Milliat Lyon) and the State Award for Architecture and Sustainability (Elementary School Edlach, Dornbirn).
The office was founded in 1994 by Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller. In 2004, a location in Vienna was added. In 2005 they set up a branch in St. Gallen, where projects are handled together with Christof Stäheli. In 2015, the Paris office was opened, followed by Munich in 2016. Since 2017, they have been running the office together with Dominik Philipp and Patrick Stremler. Helmut Dietrich left the office as partner and managing director on 23 October 2023. Dominik Philipp, Patrick Stremler and Much Untertrifaller continue to lead the office as sole partners and managing directors.
