Filippo Cannata
Profile
Filippo Cannata is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), the Professional Lighting Designers Association (PLDA), and the Italian Association of Lighting Design (AIDI). An excellent visiting card for this young lighting designer whose studio is one of the very few – among the most reliable at least – based in Southern Italy, and to be more precise in Benevento.
Cannata & Partner boasts over 15 years of experience and has several lighting projects to its credit: for offices, monuments and historical buildings, city centres, cinemas, casinos, restaurants, private churches, villas, railway stations, undergrounds, trading centres, museums and exhibitions.
The works that Filippo Cannata and his team conceive aim to the most advanced technologies which it is possible to find on the market, and design solutions founded on the simplicity of use and maintaining and the reliability.
The studio is organized in order to get the best result with regard to times and costs, on the assumption that a lighting project can’t reduce itself to a mere technical or technological question. According to Filippo Cannata, it’s more important to decide why and what has to be lit than how. “If the question was to simply guarantee an uniform level of light both for intensity and distribution on some vertical and horizontal surfaces, the problem would concern only the engineers – the Italian lighting designer explains – and the matter could be solved rather quickly. But the question is much more complicated. Actually it exists the need to devise an interpretative “model” of the object or space to be lit, that is the need to define, on this basis, a true philosophy of the project”.
Among his most recent works, we can mention the lighting project for Diners Club International new headquarters in Rome, a masterpiece of the Italian architecture of thirties by Mario De Renzi.
