Anne Fougeron
Profile
Fougeron Architecture is a nationally recognized design firm whose work exhibits a strong commitment to clarity of thought, design integrity and quality of architectural detail. The firm’s decidedly modernist attitude is the result of founder Anne Fougeron’s vision to create a practice dedicated to finding the perfect alignment between architectural idea and built form. Her work can be defined by three basic tenets:
• Architectural space is modulated by the quality and character of the natural light,
• Innovative use of structure becomes the architectural ornament, and;
• Exploration into the visual and tactile nature of materials enhances how people engage a building.
Ms. Fougeron’s keen interest in crossing disciplinary boundaries has led the firm to develop a collaborative creative process that capitalizes on her relationships with craftsmen and artists who are experts in their fields. Contrary to most traditional practices, the firm does not separate between the design and production parts of the work process; preferring to believe that the process of design and innovation must continue through all phases of design and construction. This relentless pursuit of design excellence has won the firm a number of awards and commendations, including a 2008 National AIA Award for Tehama Grasshopper loft.
Each project undertaken by the office is an exercise in communicating not only design intent, but also in emotionally affecting those who inhabit them. The office focuses on fewer selected projects and developing intimate relationships with its clients. In so doing, Ms. Fougeron’s personal involvement in the design of each project from inception through occupancy is assured. Three senior staff assist her, their technical and managerial expertise assure that each project remains consistent with its stated goals throughout the design and construction process.
The firm’s work ranges impressively in scale and type for both private and public sector clients. Fougeron Architecture is committed to non-profit and government organizations through its ongoing work for Planned Parenthood, Mercy Housing, & the San Francisco Public Library. Current projects include health care, commercial and residential work. Residential work encompasses new single-family homes as well as 100 units of affordable housing in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley.
Fougeron Architecture is an HRC certified LBE & and is committed to maintaining a diversified workforce.
Biography
Anne Fougeron, FAIA, is the principal of Fougeron Architecture in San Francisco, California. Born of French parents and raised in Paris and New York, she credits her bicultural upbringing as the source of her aesthetic values, which combine a respect for historic precedent with an interest in the intersection of old and new. It was when she began her undergraduate education that Anne was first able to harmonize her aesthetic values with her academics. She majored in Architectural History at Wellesley College and then received a master of architecture degree at the University of California, Berkeley. Before starting her own firm, Fougeron worked for San Francisco architect and urban designer Daniel Solomon for three years, an experience that shaped her awareness of the interplay between buildings and urban environment.
In 1986, she founded Fougeron Architecture and has gone on to design award-winning private - and public - sector projects in a decidedly modernist vocabulary. Known for her diverse portfolio, featuring projects of institutional, commercial, health-care and residential clients, each project by Fougeron Architecture is subtly provocative. A primary concern is how the inhabitants of a building will interact with each other and with the building itself for years to come.
Anne Fougeron knows that buildings that are well built, that foster connections, and inspire their inhabitants, are an ethical responsibility. She began to pursue this philosophy of humane modernism tangibly in the 1990s when, in response to a series of violent attacks on Planned Parenthood clinics, she volunteered her design services to the organization, knowing that their clinics could be designed to be both safe and nurturing. This philosophy of humane modernism has been applied to encompass libraries, affordable housing and not-for-profit foundations. Whether she is transforming existing buildings or creating entirely new environments, her thoughtful, rule-bending designs address the aspirations, opportunities and challenges that come with each commission.
In practice for more than 25 years, Anne Fougeron remains personally involved in all aspects of her firm’s work, working with her team and consultants to realize each project. This is architecture that enriches lives and communities, energizes our cities, and architecture that advances social equality. Fougeron has taught architectural design to undergraduate and graduate students at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and the University of California, Berkeley, where she served as the Howard Friedman Visiting Professor of Professional Practice in the Department of Architecture from 2003 to 2004.
