Profile
Hemsworth Architecture is a young, award winning, full-service architectural firm based in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
It is our belief that meaningful architecture is the direct result of a clear understanding of a project’s site, a thoughtful imagining of the programmatic opportunities, and a deep understanding of our client’s aspirations.
Be it an ice arena in northern British Columbia, an outdoor school on the Cheakamus River, a Passive House factory in Pemberton, or a private residence in Whistler, our approach is governed by the collaborative discovery of a project’s specific opportunities with each of our clients.
It is our ambition that these projects hold a strong relationship to both their site and the communities that they serve and are constructed in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner.
Hemsworth Architecture approaches sustainability as more of a question than as an pre-considered answer.
Hemsworth Architecture is the recipient of the 2016 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture for the design of the BC Passive House Factory in Pemberton, BC.
Biography
John Hemsworth, Architect AIBC, MRAIC, M. ARCH, B. ENG, LEED AP
John applies his diverse experience in architectural design, mechanical engineering, environmental initiatives, and community development work to further our commitment to an environmentally sustainable and culturally sensitive architecture.
With over 16 years of architectural experience, John has been involved with all aspects of architectural services, including: feasibility studies, programming, design, contract documents and construction administration. His work has been recognized with numerous provincial and national awards.
John is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, teaching design studio and serves as a regular critic and thesis mentor, as time permits.
As well as John’s architectural pursuits, he has been involved in many environmental and community development projects. Most notable as:
Artist in Residence for the Stanley Park Environmental Art Project, a civic response to the windstorms of 2006,
Field Staff for Youth Challenge International (1995), a not-for-profit organization constructing nursery schools for Amer-Indian peoples in Guyana, South America,
Director of FoodRunners (1994), a Vancouver based food recovery project of the Vancouver Food Bank.
