Profile
JAC studios is an architecture and design practice embracing the sphere between architecture and art. Through the three studios, Practice, Residency and Salon, we explore both the practical and the theoretical, aiming for results that are innovative, of high quality and socially useful. The philosophy is that projects are to be seen in a contextual setting, regardless of scale. Projects are to address the social, spatial and sustainable issues and are developed physically and conceptually in a parallel run. The projects performed covers the scales of architecture, urban and exhibitions. We provide architectural consultation from sketch to completed project.
Johan Carlsson
Johan is a versatile lead designer, teacher and prin¬cipal founder of the award-winning exhibition design studio JAC Studios. With an extensive scale and range of projects across both the public and private sphere, the work chal¬lenges the way we view interiors and exhibition design. With a consistent emphasis on storytelling across projects, the work strives to promote a fresh approach to the way design is curated and imagined.
Johan’s work stems from a focus of hand-craft and deep understanding of how things are made and produced. This is evident in the design of ‘House of Sweden’ where skilful detailing allows for a seamless integration of technology into bespoke furniture that celebrate Swedish craft heritage. The recently completed Wadden Sea Centre, a permanent UNESCO exhibition invokes the sense of wonder and exploration in a unique site on the west coast of Denmark. The exhibition utilises a calm ‘un¬cluttered’ approach yet provides a clear and poign¬ant message and dialogue with guests.
In the years 2002 - 2010 Johan Carlsson ran, together with graphic designer Pulsk Ravn, the gallery and design group RACA, which carried out several exhi¬bitions in Denmark and participated actively in the international art scene. The core aspect to developing a project is rooted in context, relationship to the site, history, user pref¬erences and clients ambitions. This is coupled with respect and sensitivity for the existing, valued ethics and aesthetics. Johan has, through his work as a creative entrepreneur, practicing architect, teacher and lecturer, gained fluency in leadership and project management.
