60 Years German Design Council – 60 Years Design Culture
The German Design Council is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Its establishment as a foundation, which was decisively driven by the BDI, was preceded by a resolution by the German Bundestag which demanded the establishment of such a body to strengthen the competitiveness of German industry. On 13 June 2013, the German Design Council commemorated its parliamentary roots under the motto 60 Years Design Culture with a debate in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche. Speakers from various sectors explained the importance and perspectives of the discipline with regard to politics, business and society. The festive ceremony was accompanied by an international congress to be held on 14 June in Frankfurt/Main which was dedicated to the subject of a European design policy for a very good reason.
The German Design Council was founded as a foundation in 1953 by decree of the German Federal Parliament at the initiative of the German Parliament. It supports the business world in all aspects of design and is one of the world’s leading centers of expertise on design. The German Design Council repeatedly champions good design through its competitions, exhibitions, conferences, seminars and publications.
Today, the foundation boasts more then 200 members, including designers, corporations, associations and institutions – all of them committed to the principle that design is more than just a sleek surface but a crucial factor for business and cultural success and an unmistakable USP.
Another key component of the German Design Council’s strategy for encouraging good design is its promotion of young talent. Its projects support up-and-coming designers during their undergraduate studies and provide communications and financial support for outstanding newcomers to facilitate their progression into professional life.
