MORE ABOUT SKRAM
About:
Skram Furniture Company was founded in 2001. The company has earned a domestic and international following for its approach to modern design—one that emphasizes sustainable practices, authentic materials, and extraordinary workmanship.
Skram craftsmen mix traditional techniques and cutting-edge fabrication processes to create products that meet the highest standards of precision and durability. With expertise in a wide range of materials–including timber, hardwood veneer, metals, leather, and stone–the company’s products are uniquely suited to diverse settings. Skram’s furnishings are specified in a broad range of environments from residential to commercial and hospitality.
Belief:
Perhaps we are an anachronism but we reject the idea of obsolescence, the idea that the life of an object is limited either by aesthetics or structural resilience. We are instead committed to a deeper interpretation of sustainability, one that emphasizes minimalism over excess, innovation in process and in design, and attentiveness to the consequences our production has on our community and the natural world.
Our products are a distillation of the essential. They are a spare negotiation of beauty, utility and durability. With each object, we embark on a measured refinement to find its core, which is then expressed through a graceful coalescence of form, line, proportion and materiality.
Materiality:
It all starts with sound design: Original but grounded in history, simple but refined. We believe that precious materials augment sound design, but they do not compensate for mediocre design.
The materials that constitute the Skram range are the finest of their kind. They are selected, matched, seamed, and joined by experts devoted to craft, not by machines. The character – perfect imperfection – of our materials affirms and enhances the identity of each object.
Bespoke:
Each product is customizable in material, scale, and configuration beyond Skram’s standard options to respond to individual taste, setting, and budget. This service is offered on a one-off basis or on a contract volume.
For firms or designers specializing in high profile, large-scale interior architectural projects, our custom contract division offers full-service bespoke design and fabrication. For inquiries regarding these projects, please email contract@skramfurniture.com
Sustainability:
Conservation and recycling are mainstays of the environmental movement, and the company is dedicated to such practices. The Company minimizes waste and the use of harmful chemicals, and uses responsibly harvested materials.
Beyond these practices, Skram rejects built-in obsolescence and argues for the creation of objects of lasting beauty, crafted with care, and intended for a lifetime of use.
Skram’s place as a leader in sustainable manufacturing was cemented with the 2015 installation of a rooftop solar array at its Burlington, North Carolina facility. The energy resulting from the installation directly powers the machinery used to build the Company’s furniture, with excess energy fed back into the traditional power grid. The benefits of Skram’s conversion include the annual offset of over 30,000 pounds of coal and over 50,000 pounds of CO2.
