MORE ABOUT STEPHEN YABLON ARCHITECTURE
Profile
Stephen Yablon Architecture is committed to creating inspiring and humane contemporary architecture that helps people live better in our time - Architecture that creates change, place, and identity. SYA’s work includes institutional and commercial facilities and residential projects for a wide range of clients, including the City of New York, Brooklyn Museum, Columbia University, Planned Parenthood of NYC, SONY, Angelo, Gordon, NYU Langone Medical Center and The City University of New York. Established in 1995, the office is known for new construction, adaptive reuse, renovation and interiors projects that are open, light-filled, subtly responsive to context and focused on encouraging a sense of community. The firm is distinguished by a holistic approach which includes research, award-winning contemporary design, technical excellence, and personalized client service. We believe all are essential for the creation of truly exceptional architecture that enables our clients and their communities to successfully achieve their visions and goals.
SYA has been widely recognized for design excellence including numerous awards, publications, and exhibits. The firm’s work has been published extensively in Architectural Record, The New York Times, Interior Design, Oculus, and The Architect’s Newspaper among others. SYA has been twice selected for the NYC Department of Design and Construction’s Design Excellence Initiative, under which it has completed some of its most acclaimed projects. The office was awarded First Place in the international competition for the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Visitor’s Pavilion and was selected as one of the winners of MoMA/PS1’s Rockaway Call for Ideas. Earlier, SYA was recognized as an important emerging firm by Interior Design and in NEXT, an exhibit presented by the New York City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
“While his modernist lineage is clearly visible in his work, Yablon is not a buttoned-up designer of austere boxes... Yablon likes to experiment with light, texture, and surface, as well as text and images to reflect his clients’ identities.”
Alan Brake, The Architect’s Newspaper
“Almost all of Stephen Yablon Architecture’s work has had a socially committed civic character from their exceptionally elegant Betances Community Center and Boxing Gym to the Central Harlem Health Center to their Student Advisory Center for Columbia University. Surely one of their most expansive and sensitive buildings has been their South Carolina Guest Pavilion, a subtle but assertively modern reinterpretation of a traditional domestic manner of the region.”
Kenneth Frampton, Ware Professor of Architecture, Columbia University
