Studio Nienke Hoogvliet is a design studio for material research, experimental and conceptual design. Nienke works as a freelance designer for different companies and institutions but also continues her research in self-initiated design projects. Nienke founded her studio in 2013, after graduating from Lifestyle & Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam.
She was determined to follow her heart: focussing on materials that can contribute to a more sustainable world. Growing up near the beach, her connection to the ocean was the foundation of her research into seaweed and fish skin. In her projects SEA ME and the SEA ME collection she researches how seaweed can contribute to a more sustainable textile industry. Although the research is ongoing, she published her findings in a book ‘Seaweed Research’.
Next to her research and design projects, Nienke teaches at two art schools: the Willem de Kooning Academy (department Lifestyle Transformation Design) and the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design (department Material). Her work is been published in various international media like FRAME magazine, Dezeen, Milk Decoration Magazine.
She appeared on Dutch television several times with the projects RE-SEA ME and Waterschatten. Her work is exhibited worldwide in institutions like Artipelag, Stockholm |Chamber Gallery, New York | Salone del Mobile, Milan, Italy | Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven.
