The USM U. Schärer Söhne AG family business was founded in Münsingen near Bern in 1885 as an ironmongery and metalworking company. As it entered its third generation in the early 1960s, it took the crucial step that would make it a modern, design-orientated industrial company. Originally developed by engineer Paul Schärer and Swiss architect Fritz Haller to meet personal needs, the modular furniture system was first used in modern offices but has long since established itself in many other areas of life. More product lines have been added over the decades – including the USM Haller Table, the USM Kitos table construction system and USM Privacy Panels – that are compatible with one another and have themselves become coveted Swiss exports.
