Profile
VARY DESIGN established in 2016, is a creative and pioneering design firm dedicated to critical research and innovative design as responses to different urban issues during the cities’ developments and regenerations, though cross-scale projects from urban planning and design, architecture, landscape to interiors.
The works of VARY ranges from urban planning and city design to commercial and residential buildings, from cultural and office buildings to interiors and exhibitions, as well as landscape projects which are located in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Xi’an, Los Angeles and many other cities.
The works have been widely recognized, being granted American Architecture Prize (AAP), World Architecture News Awards (WAN Awards),Architizer A+Awards and Paul M. Heffernan Fellowship as well as exhibited in Venice Biennale, Beijing Design Week, Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, AIA Boston Chapter and Los Angeles A+D Museum.
The core team has accumulated much experience through working in depth with leading offices worldwide like SOM, Safdie, KPF, Coop Himmelb(l)au, and SWA. The principals have been closely linking academics and practice, through teaching in Harvard GSD, and previously in UCLA and Hong Kong University.
Their publications include Townization: In Search of New Paradigm of Urbanization in China (Springer, 2018), Urban Grids: Designing the Regular City (ORO, 2018), Chongqing: Searching for Regularity as A Transformative Model in the Design of the Contemporary City (Harvard GSD, 2018), Savannah: Rethinking the Multi-Scalar Capacity of the City Project (Harvard GSD, 2018), Shanghai Regeneration: Five Paradigms (AR+D, 2016), and Hangzhou: Grids from Canal to Maxi-Block (AR+D, 2016).
