Floor Light A808

Free-standing lights from Artek, Designed by Alvar Aalto

Product description

The hand-turned shade of this elegant floor light is made of delicate, lacquered metal strips that prevent glare by diffusing light evenly. The strips form concentric circles of increasing size that combine to form an inverted bowl shape. The slender angled neck has a polished brass collar that contrasts appealingly with the stand’s black leather finish, which is hand-sewn in Finland. The light was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1955 for the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki.

Concept

For Alvar Aalto, the interplay of natural and artificial light was of central importance to his architecture, and he took great care in designing light fittings for his buildings. Sculptural in presence, beautiful as objects, Artek floor lights cast a light as characteristically diffuse as one would expect from the designs of Alvar Aalto.
All of Artek’s floor lights are manufactured in Finland.
