Kiila Bench

Benches from Artek, Designed by Daniel Rybakken

Product description

Kiila is Finnish for “wedge” – appropriate given the simple system of connecting wooden legs with wedge-shaped metal joints that lies behind the Kiila Bench. The solid ash legs, available in a choice of colours, are united by a single horizontal surface. Versatile, the Kiila Bench can be used as seating, storage, and display. Sturdy, portable, and at home in a range of interiors, it is part of a series of hallway furniture. An exercise in rational design and engineered construction, the Kiila Bench is practical, discreet, and in possession of a quiet beauty.

Concept

Kiila means “wedge” in Finnish, and a simple system of connecting wooden legs with wedge-shaped metal joints is behind the Kiila series of hallway furniture. The Kiila coat stand, coat rack, bench, and podium are exercises in rational design and engineered construction by Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken. These small pieces of furniture aid organisation, and can be seen as supporting elements in an interior – versatile, useful, and discreet.

Key to their design is an honest and clever use of industrial techniques and standard elements in conjunction with a subtle sculptural nature in which all aspects of construction are made visible. Rybakken has created a series with timeless appeal and a quiet beauty.
