PK1 | Chair

Chairs from Carl Hansen & Søn, Designed by Poul Kjaerholm

Product description

Poul Kjærholm was one of the star architects behind Danish Modern. With his functionalistic approach to furniture design, Kjærholm cultivated simplicity and lightness. Moreover, as a designer, he excelled at combining his favorite material, steel, with other organic materials. Both qualities are reflected beautifully in the PK1 dining chair.

Originally made with wicker, the PK1 is available today in an updated version with an FSC-certified weaved paper cord seat, which looks equally beautiful from both the front and the back. The weaving technique has been recreated by Carl Hansen & Søn in accordance with Kjærholm’s original chair design; it takes a skilled craftsman 15 hours to weave the seat by hand. The combination of industrial steel and weaving paper cord exudes lightness and elegance; the PK1 is today considered a design icon because it balances aesthetics, comfort and stability beautifully.
