200 Carlotta
Armchairs from Cassina, Designed by Tobia Scarpa, Afra Scarpa
Product description
In 1967, Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed Carlotta for the Cassina Young Play program, a collection of sophisticated minimalist pieces designed to deliver casual comfort to a younger clientele. For Carlotta, the architects employed only four frames and a complex system of joints and finger joints. Their design simplicity highlights the skills of the Meda joinery in masterful wood craftsmanship, in this case, teak. The internal corners of the structure have the signature semi-circular cutouts that call to mind the intent of the original design to focus on optimizing the production process. The hand-woven support cords crisscross the frame, thanks to a twist in the wood produced with CNC machines, demonstrating the innovative content Cassina invests in the project. Carlotta is perfect outdoor seating for casual comfort, thanks to its cushions padded with PET fiber.
Concept
It was 1967 when Afra & Tobia Scarpa designed Carlotta for the Cassina Young Play project. The idea behind this collection was to target a young audience with products aimed at being serially produced. Today Cassina transfers the charm of this armchair, retrieved from the company’s historical archives, and develops it for outdoor use in collaboration with Tobia Scarpa.
Carlotta has an informal, carefree soul, with an ample and welcoming seat. The refined workmanship of the wood, in this case teak, uses the same innovative system of joints as the original model, emphasising the attention to detail that has always distinguished both the work of the Cassina carpentry workshop and Tobia Scarpa. The frame’s internal edges, for example, are characterised by millwork that allows the parts to join easily with elements that are already finished, while the supporting handwoven cords are threaded into angles carved differently from where they exit so that they remain flat and flawless.
