Borealis Swatch Carpet
Rugs from Christine Kröncke
Product description
BOREALIS carpets are made from Tencel® and are certified. The yarns are made from different sources of wood pulp, beech or eucalyptus wood. The production process involves dissolving wood pulp in a non-toxic solvent (N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide), unlike viscose, which is produced through a more chemically intensive process using sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide to dissolve the cellulose. Tencel is considered more sustainable due to the closed loop process where the solvent is recycled after the process. This minimises waste and reduces the use of water and chemicals.
The strengths and weaknesses in everyday use at home/in high-traffic areas such as hotels, catering etc. compared to viscose and wool are as follows:
Tencel: Strengths: Softness, durability, moisture wicking properties and wrinkle resistance. Ideal for home use and moderately frequented areas. Weaknesses: May be less durable in high traffic areas than more robust fibres such as nylon or polypropylene.
Viscose: Strengths: Luxurious feel and look. Good for low traffic areas or decorative purposes. Weaknesses: Less durable, susceptible to water damage, stains and wear. Not ideal for high traffic areas or high use locations.
Wool: Strengths: Durable, easy to clean and generally well suited to a variety of uses, including high traffic areas. Weaknesses: Can stain easily and may require more frequent cleaning. Can flatten and wear faster than some synthetic fibres.
