Concept
JUNIO is a single-piece bench in granite grey cast stone with a stripped finish. The design reveals a geometry in which the straight lines and the rounded edges of the backrest and the seat are able to generate presents, space and conflict in any urban scenario. The grooves in the seat not only drain rainwater and increased ventilation, but also provide an unusual lightness in a monoblock cast stone element. JUNIO is produced in two sizes, and can be aligned in series to form long benches without requiring any anchorage during the installation process. Architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz designed JUNIO in 1999 as a continuation of their initial designs for Escofet: ABRIL, MAYO and MAYO CIRCULAR. This collection is part of a new generation of neutral, abstract elements for widespread use which have become a basic vocabulary for the construction of a previously non-existent language. These are self-explanatory elements. They focalise, punctuate, situate and arrange space. They relate well to the land and the horizontal plane. This collection integrates well into an urban setting without imposing, in spite of its material condition which projects a desire to remain firmly in place. These are simple, rigorous designs in their formulation, but universal in their application.
