- about the artist: Dosso Dossi (Giovanni di Niccolò de Lutero) ca. 1490 - 1542
the Italian painter is regarded as the most important representative of the Ferrarese art of the late Renaissance. At the age of twenty-five Dosso spent time in Mantua and probably in Venice painting religious and secular themes. In 1517 Dosso also worked for the Dukes of Ferrara. There he spent most of his career and often worked with his brother Battista. The Este family appreciated the arts and cultivated a court atmosphere of culture and refinement by bringing together brilliant painters, writers and musicians, including Raphael from Rome and Giovanni Bellini and Titian from Venice. Around 1520 Dosso possibly went to Rome, since he increasingly integrated Roman elements into his art.
