Concept

Campus chair, from Swedish design company Lammhults, was launched in 1992 and became an instant success. The chair, designed by Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen, has during these 20 years been sold in more than 1 million units. It is, without a doubt, Lammhults best selling product of all time.

It started already in 1989 when Lammhults asked the Danish designer duo to design a product especially suited for the export market. The requirement for the product was a functional chair that could be sold in large volumes. A given requirement for many furniture companies but a difficult task to achieve. The focus of the design process for Campus was that the chair should work in larger numbers without in any way taking over the room or the architecture. The result was a small, both stackable and linkable, chair of steel tubing and veneered seat and back. The simple lines and clear design with the wave-shaped back allows Campus to work both as a solitaire and in several hundreds. In large quantities the wave-shaped backs form an undulating ensemble. The innovative back mounting, with no visible fittings, is a beautiful detail that gives character to the chair. This technique is beeing used in several following Lammhults chairs.

Campus chair was soon complemented with an armchair, several accessories and also a series of tables. The molded seat and back in wood veneer and the simple steel tube frame is available in several different options and colours, also upholste- red seat and a fully upholstered model is available. In 2010 Campus Air, a plastic version of the chair, was launched. As the name implies the chair can also be supplied with a frame for outdoor use.

The Campus chair was the product that put Lammhults on the international map and can, among many other places around the world be found at Bridge Art & Sience College, Doha, Qatar; Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark; BMWs factory, Regensburg, Germany and Kogahuin University, Tokyo, Japan.

– Campus is still, 20 years later, one of the products we sell the most of, says Åke Jansson, MD at Lammhults Möbel. Campus is an excellent example of what Lammhults stands for, clear functionality and timelessness along with high quality. This results in environmental and economical gains for both our customers and for us as a producer.

The cooperation between Lammhults and the Danes has been ongoing since 1987 and has resulted in several successful and award winning products. Campus has been awarded the Forsnäs prize, 1994, and Best of Neocon, Gold Award, 1995.
