PH Artichoke Glass
Suspended lights from Louis Poulsen, Designed by Poul Henningsen
Product description
Poul Henningsen’s PH Artichoke Glass was launched in 2008. The origins of the glass version date back to 1927-31 when Poul Henningsen developed the PH Septima glass light – a pendant with seven glass shades which Louis Poulsen manufactured up until 1940 when it was discontinued due to a lack of raw materials during the war. When Poul Henningsen was asked to develop a light for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant in 1958, he was able to finish the project in three months, because PH Artichoke Glass is based on the ideas in Septima. Septima consisted of seven shades made from clear glass with six sand-blasted regions. In PH Artichoke, the shades were grouped into ’picket fences’, as Poul Henningsen called them, and the light was made of copper. PH Artichoke Glass, which is made of handmade sandblasted glass, is closer to Septima in its expression. The light is diffused through the leaves, making it soft and comfortable. Whether the light is switched on or off, the leaves have a transparent ice-like appearance, adding elegance and lightness to the room.
Concept
One of the world’s most renowned lighting fixtures, PH Artichoke, now comes as a standard glass version fixture. A few (custom design) versions were previously made of PH Artichoke in glass. Now, in 2008, the fixture’s 50th anniversary paves the way for a re-introduction of the glass version as a permanent member of the exclusive range.
The glass version of PH Artichoke dates back to 1927-31, when Poul Henningsen designed a glass pendant by the name of PH Septima – a pendant with seven glass shades – which was manufactured by Louis Poulsen until 1940, when it was phased out due to lack of materials during the war. Asked to design a fixture for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant in 1958, Poul Henningsen completed the assignment in three months as PH Artichoke is based on the ideas behind PH Septima.
PH Septima consisted of seven shades in clear glass, sand-blown in six fields. PH Artichoke divided the shades into picket fences as Poul Henningsen called them, and it was made of copper.
Of hand-made, sand-blown glass PH Artichoke Glass has an expression similar to that of PH Septima. The soft light is diffused through the leaves to produce soft, comfortable light. Lit as well as unlit, the fixture leaves have an “ice look” that adds elegance and lightness to any room.
PH Artichoke Glass is available from select dealers and only on order in the same sizes as the other versions of PH Artichoke, viz. with diameters of 480, 600, 720 and 840 mm.
