Product description
The latest addition to the Tense family, a table designed in 2009 by Piergiorgio and Michele Cazzaniga, it somehow represents a leap into the past, reviving an ancient craft tradition.
In the new Tense Material Heritage, the wooden table top is finished with a handmade process known as ‘sgorbiatura’ (gouging). This technique involves manually carving the wood in an irregular manner to achieve a wavy effect and offer an intensely tactile experience. This meticulous process – which requires several hours of work for each table – completes a frame that embodies the technological and industrial innovation that enabled it to reach considerable dimensions.
Structure and surfaces
Steel legs, 35x35 mm section, with internal structural tie-rod. The 35 mm thick top is a load-bearing composite panel made from an internal aluminium profile frame and a polystyrene filling.
Natural or black-stained oak finish, transparent acrylic surface finish. Edges and legs covered with 3 mm thick solid wood.
The fineness and special workmanship of the tops can result in differences in finish and tone. Therefore, any visual irregularities in the design, shading, and non-uniformity of the surface and colour of the material should be considered unique and valuable characteristics.
Dimensions and type
Available in 26 dimensions, in the dining H73, coffee table H45, and low table H35 variants.

Concept
Table featuring new mono-material finishes.
The important technological innovation it incorporates, combined with the tensioning capacity of the components makes it possible to build tabletops in large sizes which remain perfectly flat and also extremely light.
Frame and tabletops
- Natural oak wood with transparent acrylic finish. Top, edges and legs coated by 3mm thick solid wood
- Stone, in reconstructed stone, transparent acrylic finish. Top, edges and legs coated with application of 3mm thick material.
- Brass, in brass plate, matt brushed finish and transparent acrylic cover. Top, edges and legs coated by 0.5mm brass plate.
- Carbone, created in solid natural oak wood, thickness 3mm, subjected to surface acid etching treatment applied by using natural acids without chemical additives.
This innovative process inspired by alchemists of the past allows to alter the organic properties of wood.
The reaction of tannins contained in wood generates natural “burning” that endows the surface with a unique carbonised effect.
Contact with the natural acid enhances sensitive wood with the shade and colors of warm intense black, rich in natural gradations that are not uniform but unique.
The natural surface features a special extensive matt finish that is rough and worn, a genuine visual and tactile experience for the user.

Top, edges and legs covered with a sheet of material in a thickness of about 3mm.
- Marble, this particular finish, reconstructed marble, is made starting with marble dust that has been mixed with a filler and is then spread manually over the entire surface of the table.
Top, edges and legs are covered with a sheet of material in a thickness of about 3mm.
Finishes: black ebony and white Carrara marble
- Fine wood: in Italian walnut, transparent acrylic finish. Edges and legs covered in 2 mm-thick cut walnut, processed with sawed effect (series of irregular cuts of different depths). Top covered in 2 mm-thick wood, fine smooth finish with variable slats which give the surface a distinctive array of shades, exalting the natural characteristics of the wood and raw material.
- Diamond (glossy red): an innovative material processing and stratification technique that showcases the top, its qualities and the depth of the colour.
The material stratification process is based on a special mass-coloured concrete resin around 3 mm in thickness which is expertly combined with a binder and applied by hand all over the top in a deliberately irregular and non-uniform way.
The subsequent combination of the black patina, rough, dynamic and with lots of shadowy areas, and the surface finish consisting of various layers of polyester, extremely thick, smooth and very glossy, creates an original lens effect notable for its colour and depth.
Surface, edges and legs with application of 3 mm-thick material composed of a mass-coloured cement base and surface finish in glossy polyester.
The 35mm thick tabletop is a load-bearing composite board built with an internal frame consisting of either aluminium profiles and polystyrene filler (wood and stone) or an acrylic resin honeycomb and two outer layers of aluminium (brass).
35x35mm steel legs with internal structural tie-rod.
Dimensions
The Tense table is an icon of the MDF Italia collection, a project which develops
and evolves in terms of its own TENSITY.
At Imm 2019, the table evolves and becomes a collection, almost a system,
with the introduction of new heights and dimensions.
Today Tense, together with Tense Material and Tense Intarsia, comes in:
- 5 heights (H35, H45, H73, H90, H110)
- 36 sizes
- 12 finishes
- 170 types
- around 1584 variants
EXCEPTIONS
The reduction of the maximum sizes of the brass version (up to D98 x L300 cm) and the Italian walnut version (up to D120 x L300) represents the technical limits of the materials employed to build the tabletops.
Accessories – matt black painted
The table is also available in a version equipped with 1 or 2 openings and an undertop tray. The openings in size 350 or 420mm are in aluminium.
A steel spring can be inserted into the pre-drilled holes (placed every 50cm) at the bottom of the under top tray to group the cables on the floor together.
