Night Mirror by Brita Molin Vintage Scandinavian Carpet
Rugs from Nazmiyal Rugs, Designed by Britta Molin
Product description
The artist, Brita Molin's needlework is visible throughout this striking piece, drawing attention to the fabric itself in a way that is consistent with Swedish designs. An oceanic scene is cut in half horizontally down the middle and establishes two distinct backgrounds: the top a deep, grounding navy blue and the bottom a rich, inviting sea-green. The viewer's eyes follow liquid paths of movement set in a fiery crimson flow down the tapestry, which create contrast and flow throughout the piece. A mandarin orange and sunshine yellow shape rests at the rug's center, bringing to mind visions of a vivacious sky over the sea.
Woven in 1971, an oceanic-looking scene is cut in half horizontally down the middle and establishes two distinct backgrounds: the top a deep, grounding navy blue and the bottom a rich, inviting sea-green. The viewer's eyes follow liquid paths of movement set in a fiery crimson flow down the tapestry, which create contrast and flow throughout the piece. A mandarin orange and sunshine yellow shape rests at the rug's center, bringing to mind visions of a vivacious sky over the sea. Measuring 9' x 13'7", this room-size vintage rug adds a bold contemporary feel its space.
More than just a lovely vintage rug, this carpet is a true work of art by a renowned mid-century artist: Brita Molin was a Swedish designer who gained renown world-wide, and held many positions as a respected expert in her field. In addition to spending time at the Academie Libre in Stockholm, she also studied at the National College of Art in Stockholm, and later held a position as the head of the design department at Gothenburg University.
In addition to her rug and textile designs, Molin was a skilled etcher and graphic artist, known for her use of vivid colors and a modern abstract aesthetic. She was extremely influenced by music, which is apparent in her rhythmic and joyous designs. Molin had several high-profile exhibitions during her lifetime, and her work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Biblioteque Nationale de France in Paris, as well as the Art Museum of Berlin.
