Concept

Pitagora marked the beginning of a new phase for Olivari, coinciding with the progressive assumption of control over the company by the family’s third generation. I remember that in those years, I hadn’t started working in our family business yet. Right after obtaining my degree in engineering, I was employed by Fiat. Absorbed by my interest in automobiles, I developed a special admiration for the work of Giorgetto Giugiaro and his integral approach to car design. So it was an entirely natural decision to involve him in the design of a handle. As much as we wanted to offer him the freedom of choosing from different types of technology, our design brief stated a preference for the use of plastic. The resulting form was less of an expression of the plastic qualities of the material than an exaltation of its chromatic possibilities. Taking the handle apart into its constituent elements – a perfect cylinder for the handle grip and a cube for the shaft connecting to the rose – clarifies the logic of its construction, allowing for the possibility of colour combinations. Once the design was translated into a metal version, the potential for a wide range of combinations was maintained by diversifying the metallic finishes. Antonio Olivari
