Mariline: A parasol inspired by Marilyn’s dress

Sywawa and Bieke Hoet are 2 Bruges “partners in design”. They have combined the creativity of designer Bieke Hoet with Sywawa’s expertise into a new amazing parasol. “Together we have translated Marilyn’s blown up dress into an evenly dazzling parasol”, thus says Bieke Hoet.

While everybody has been gasping for the first sunbeam, Bieke Hoet was looking for her own way to block out the sun. And for a designer this solution obviously has to be stylish and elegant. The fabric of the Mariline parasol has horizontal incisions that create a fascinating and charming game of sun, light and shadow. On hot summer days the flashing lines make you drift away to the land of Nod. Moreover, the incisions have their own function: the wind that blows into them offers you a breeze of fresh air and it prevents the wind from blowing away your parasol as they let the air pressure escape.

The Bruges designers’ office Hoet has been a solid value inside the world of opticians for decades. Accessories, mirrors and opticians’ furniture are only handful of items available in the vast supply of eye catchers that Hoet offers next to its own collection of glasses. Nonetheless, this does not prevent the creative team from digress to other challenges now and then.

It has been an attractive change for both partners to combine both their branches that may seem to differ highly at first sight. Bieke Hoet’s new ideas are on the drawing table for now. To be continued…
