A sense of unity is created by the U-shaped form with two thick boards connected on one side. Functions were assigned for individual layers consisting of the two boards and gaps between. The top layer functions as the tabletop, and the gap below functions as a layer to store books and magazines. The gap between the table and the floor provides a sense of illusion as if this low table were floating.
It appears to be a cubic block from one direction. A cube is the most basic shape for our furniture and tools. The horizontal top surface of the cube can be used as a tabletop. Storage spaces can be made by creating a gap. It turns into a cabinet if drawers are added. A box-shape or cube is the basic shape of buildings as well. There is always a basic idea of how to efficiently arrange furniture in the cube. There are traditional “box-in-box” containers in Japan. Each box is packed with food or other things and carried for a long distance. After use, the empty boxes are stacked into a compact shape to reduce burden. The cubic shape has also been efficiently used for tools. In Japan, the box-shaped houses are also basically equipped with an efficient idea.
Magazines and books can be displayed and stored in the slit under the tabletop of “September”. The gap between the boards has a large storage capacity and makes a cluttered scene into a beautiful one. It has a relatively hard, masculine shape; however, a neutral-colored mirror finish (beige or light grey) can add a soft, feminine nuance to the simple and modern appearance.
