Concept

Drawing inspiration from the enduring quality and spirit of the British Utility Furniture from the 1940’s, Seleri is Mentsen’s take on classic utilitarian wooden chairs.

The structures are kept simple and efficient. The legs are reminiscent of celery stems, giving a visual appearance that is both robust and delicate, depending on the angle they are viewed.
The chairs and stools are designed for the daily use in the home as well as in the hospitality and leisure sector. The Seleri range will be available in oak, and stained or lacquered beech.

For 2014, Zilio A&C and Mentsen are introducing oak benches and a dining table to add to the Seleri family of chairs and stools launched in 2013. Sharing a simple and efficient structure, the objective remains the same*: “Seleri doesn’t have too strong a character,” says Sakurai (of Mentsen). “It is distinctive, yet doesn’t fight for attention, easily blending into its environment. Chairs should be like good alphabets: when they’re laid down, they should disappear into the page, while still affecting how you view the whole. We didn’t want something that screamed for attention.”

The Seleri range comes in oak, and stained or lacquered beech. They are also available with upholstered seats, with either a textile or leather finish.
