Within the heart of the swabian town Schwaebisch Hall in germany, the Scholl family is running a hotel since the year 1955, which is situated in historic houses from the middle ages. After recently haveing bought another old house nearby- dated to the 12th century – the whole hotel has been restructured and renovated. The interiordesign was created by Felix Severin Mack and Alexander Seifried in cooperation with Metzger&Huelsmann as architects.
A golden curtain, lasered birds and an oversized foot made from styrofoam – the unconventional concept of Felix Severin Mack.
Strong colors are dominating the design, the old parts of the building have been contrasted with clear and new surfaces and the hotel itself has been equipped with partially custom made and designed furniture with a big love for details. Thanks to the interior designers, the guests of Hotel Scholl are lead to a discovery tour through history. Entering the hall the guests are faced with the oversize sculpture of a foot made from styrofoam. By this the interior designers are paying homage to the former owner of the building: the writer-in-residence Thomas Schweicker of Schwaebisch Hall, a town chronicler without arms who wrote with his foot.
The ground floor is shaped by a huge chain curtain, made from thousands of aluminium parts, building a continous element joining the different building parts. It is only interrupted by a change of color forming a clock face in the Cafe situated in the street level. Walking further, you´re always in good company: hundreds of golden birds lasered from steel are flying over the walls of the building.
The design concept of the hotel rooms – all designed in one stile but adapting to the different floor shapes of the 600 years old building – is playing with many offbeat elements: the street level room, a former milk shop, has a closet made out of paper, the minibar has been replaced by a custom designed tea bar with an attached desk and in the bathrooms you´ll find pinewood panels stained in gold painted in a laquer used in boatbuilding. The rooms are lightened by the floorlamp series SlimSophie by FRAUMAIER.
The library of the hotel – in a new interpretation by Felix Severin Mack – offers reading matter for the guests. Since in the past, librarys used to be a place not only for books but also for objects of virtu, finds and art, the hotels library of today became an installation with books arranged with the backs in front, sorted by color and combined with contemporary pieces of art.
