Traditionally churches have been a big part of our firm's portfolio. Snarøya church, finished in 1968, is situated outside Oslo on the Snarøya peninsula. The church is designed by Harald Hille and Odd Østbye. The church's close proximity to Fornebu airport, closed in 1998, influenced the design, by requiring the tower’s height be lowered and extra noise isolation.
It is a sculptural concrete church with a square plan. In the chapel the roof is free of the walls and has windows letting light in. The rectangular plan with it's rounded corners form a sacral room. The church's organic form and low tower, situated in a green environment, make the church merge with its surroundings. The humble way it relates to the surroundings make the church seem open and including.
