Wood like Honey

‘Wood like honey’ is a residential interior project for a single family home, built in a green, recently developed neighborhood of ‘Žaliasis Slėnis’ (‘Green Valley’), Lithuania. The house is an illustration of a compact dwelling that provides multiple functions whilst the general sense of spaciousness is a part of the experience when entering the house. 140-sq.m area serves for four people. It accommodates living-dining space with an open kitchen and a fireplace, three bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, as well as a sauna and a spacious storage-utility room.

The character of the interior is modest by the choice of one main material – wood. However, it is also rich in multiple ways, when designed with different qualities that wood can offer.
One of the clients’ expressed wishes was to design the interior in such a way, that it would look beautiful with little time consumption. Therefore, we chose to work with few essential materials keeping away from the idea, that interior space is a finished composition. It is easy to keep the space clean and simple, so the spontaneous moments of everyday life, such as a bringing flowers or fruits home, become a nice ever -changing detail.

The motive of wood is used as a spine for the interior organization. Honey like oak veneer panels extend throughout the space, leading the way to the central compositional element of the living room – square picture window. Orange oak wall unfolds itself into bespoke living room cabinets – a spacious cluster of closed and open shelves. Repetition of timber elements, a small allusion of a honeycomb, is designed to obscure rarely used homeware.

We chose to embrace particularly warm color of wood, which was challenging and rewarding at the same time. Balanced by lush nature views, framed by generous windows, warmth of wood helps to attain vibrant and evocative character of space.

Attention, given to tactility of the interior elements compliments visual perception. The rhythm and reliefs of timber pieces, soft curtains, rough natural stone surfaces and furniture textiles resonate with the senses, enhancing individuality of the interior.
