For the third consecutive year, The Arrivals has opened a temporary concept store in the heart of SoHo in New York City, with an installation commissioned by New York-based Dutch designer Lotte van Velzen and British technology brand DYSON.
Playful yet elevated, The Arrivals concept store features a color and material palette inspired by Mars with an extraterrestrial atmosphere. The brand used a similar design and tonality in its concept stores in 2017, reaching New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. For The Arrivals Pop Up 2018 on 67 Greene Street, van Velzen has created a retail experience inspired by the invisible medium of air with the brand’s signature blush and chrome material palette.
Based inside an existing storefront with brick walls and concrete floors, the space was overhauled with white walls, a black ceiling, and 36 micro-fluorescent tube lights overhead, providing an industrial base for the rosy-hued installation inside. Pink, air-filled walls, formed by ultra-long tubes stacked atop one another, attached to the existing brick walls with anchor points. Are keeping in line with the concept store’s temporary design. Totaling 79, 12 inch diameter inflatable tubes, which are individually aerated via an automatic valve, and will keep an airtight pressure throughout the duration of the 5-month pop up.
AER filled
The Arrivals AER puffer, a lightweight down-filled jacket, is a source of inspiration for the space. Referencing the jacket’s ultra-lightweight construction and pale color, van Velzen translated these qualities into an architectural design for the inflatable, pink walls throughout.
Dyson Wind Wall
As a celebration of the element of air, the back of the space highlights a collaboration with Dyson. The experiential installation offers customers an opportunity to embrace the elements. The design includes 30, high-powered Dyson Supersonic hair dryers that propel 13 liters of air every second. The installation is a wind tunnel-meets-bounce house, allowing customers to play and feel lighter than air.
Temporary Space
The nature of a pop up is to be temporary, and The Arrivals concept store embraces this idea with an installation that can be unplugged, deflated, and easily put away. The goal was to build an experience, without having to touch the existing conditions of the retail shop.
Material Palette
The temporary concept store is brought to life with a synthesis of materials, including stainless steel, brushed aluminium, and mirrors. These cool-to-the-touch surfaces juxtapose with the compressible pink walls for a pop up that is somber yet high-spirited.
