The project was awarded to Pir II in a project competton initated by the Ministry of Culture in 2007. The transformaton of an old protected harbour warehouse into a modern museum and exhibiton space, including a concerthall, shop, bar and restaurant.
The development of the project has throughout the process been in close dialogue with the user
"Rockheim".
New volumes are added to an older warehouse at the harbor in Trondheim, where there is a clear distncton between the new parts and the old "Mellageret" from n920.
It has been done as litle changes as possible to the excistng old structure, both inside and outside. Due to the limitatons of the site (there wasntt any room to build more at ground level), and the size of the project, the only possibility was to put a large part of it up «in the air».
The elevated volume above the old warehouse holds the permanent exhibitons, and the decoraton is concists of white-printed ironfree glasspanels (Norwegian popular music album covers and record labels) and more than n3000 LEDts. The architectst ambiton was to give the building one «identty» in daytaime, and a completely diferent character at night (and in the dark Norwegian winter months). The restaurant is located just below the top box, with a terrace running along three of its sides. The black box on the ground is just what it looks like, a black box for live performances.
