×In May 2008 the Südwestrundfunk (“South-West Brodcasting”) began with the construction of its new 86.5 m euro building next to the SWR Funkhaus in eastern Stuttgart. The new building brings together several departments previously scattered across the Stuttgart area.
The design was created by Braunschweig-based architect Hans Struhk. The planners of the new SWR building first had to get a grasp of the production processes of a radio and television network. During the tender for the building in 2003 it soon became clear that this would be no conventional planning task. “Such a building has little in common with a standard run-of-the-mill office building”, project manager Udo Vocke explained to the newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung.
The SWR and its architects also chose the facade cladding based on functionality and innovation. A curtain-type, rear-ventilated facade system consisting of fibreC facade panels was not only in compliance with the Energy Saving Regulation, but also met the requirements of the city of Stuttgart which had further reduced target values by 20 percent. "All our decisions are based on feasibility studies”, Vocke pointed out. For the construction of the SWR building we only chose building materials which would pay off in the long term.
The fibreC facade cladding is designed as curtain-type, rear-ventilated facade which shapes the character of the building envelope. This system ensures a well-balanced indoor climate, protects the building against driving rain and condensate and provides noise insulation. Apart from constructional advantages, a curtain-type, rear-ventilated facade also offers economic benefits: controllable manufacturing costs, installation independent of weather conditions, durability and zero maintenance.
