Bauhaus meets Oscar Wilde
Heinrich Heissing loves design, function and uncompromising perfectionism – in Lübeck he makes bespoke suits and discovers new artists for the world.
„As an antiques dealer, I used to specialise in office furniture“, says the Münsterland-born tailor. „First it was Art Deco furnishings, and later I discovered Bauhaus, which led me to Tecta.“ For one part, he found that he had many things in common with the Lauenförde-based company: hand-finished craftsmanship, uncompromising perfectionism and the quality label „made in Germany“. And for the other it led to fine collectors’ items: such as the cantilever chair with a wicker seat by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. Or the aristocrat of all chairs: a bold office chair designed by Hans Könecke in Caracas back in 1954.
„I think the Bauhaus designers had a great approach“, points out Heissing:”They really showcased the benefits and effects of furniture and produced it for the masses.“
One and a half years ago, a second dream came true for him when he opened „Heissings Art“ gallery with his wife Elke at Mengstraße 52. Another place where the two can demonstrate their feeling for contemporary art and paintings. They are already staging their seventh exhibition in the 220 square-metre light-filled and airy venue under historical timber beams.
„I trust my gut feeling when selecting the artists“, admits Heinrich Heissing. He doesnot want to run a typical gallery and prefers to represent just a few artists – „but with my heart and soul“.
