The renovation of the M3 metro line in Budapest was completed in 2023. We supplied furniture for 12 of the 20 stations, for most of them our LUNGO concrete seating developed specifically for this project, inspired by the iconic composite furniture originally used in the Budapest metro system.
We worked closely with the architects throughout the design process. This collaboration aimed to meet ergonomic, aesthetic, and architectural standards as closely as possible.
Metro stations have a unique rhythm—sometimes they’re almost empty, other times filled with crowds. LUNGO had to serve both situations, offering comfort during waiting periods without occupying excessive space. Our goal was to create a new furniture collection that would replace the original seating, which had been a hallmark of the metro since its construction in the late 1970s. Our aim was to design pieces that were innovative yet reminiscent of the original designs and durable enough to serve future generations of commuters.
The furniture plays a central, character-defining role in many station designs, and it was important for these objects to be recognizable and beloved by the public. At the same time, we had to address the need for versatility and variety plus the furniture had to meet strict technical requirements for durability and cleanliness.
