Loren Metro Station

Løren station was completed in 2016 to serve the newly developed residential area of Oslo and provide it with an easy access to the city’s underground network.

In collaboration with Arne Henriksen architects, ZENISK developed a lighting concept for various zones, like entrance, escalators, corridor and platforms. All these areas required completely individual solutions in terms of functionality and aesthetics.

Perception of all rooms and functions is facilitated by addressing their architecture and materiality. Brushed steel surfaces and concrete with integrated lighting enforce the industrial quality of the space. The lighting fixtures, integrated in the specific architecture, highlight the used materials, at the same time improving room perception, orientation and safety of the users.

When creating a concept for the main entrance to the station, transparency played an important role. The visual connection between inside and outside, as well as relation between the amount of daylight and artificial light were considered. These factors lead to the decision to use multiple lighting systems, which are separately controlled and in this way allow for adjustability of the lighting scene to its environment.

Main functional lighting component are the downlights integrated in the ceiling. Transition between interior and exterior is secured by adding downlights in the canopy above main entrance, which have the same lighting characteristics like those inside. Custom designed pendants provide the additional up and down component, which not only helps to improve room perception, but also acts as an aesthetic element, adding value to the space.

Integrated lighting in the escalators provides required brightness on the steps, which in turn helps achieve a feeling of safety and improve orientation. Similarly, additional lighting is integrated in handrails along the stairs.

Achieving a feeling of safety is especially important in the passages and connections that lead to the platforms. Here, a combination of indirect and direct lighting is once again used to improve space perception, which helps to create the feeling of safe environment and at the same time provide brightness on vertical and horizontal sufaces. The uplights highlight the geometry of the room and make it appear more spatious.

Two continuous lines illuminate the platforms, ensuring the required luminance is met and providing direction and orientation for the passengers getting on and off the trains. Additional spotlights illuminate the steel walls on the side, improving perception of the whole room. Center of the platform is illuminated by direct light from spotlights on long arms, which contain an additional uplight for illuminating the ceiling. This emphasizes the height and volume of the room and helps the users get a better overview of the space.
